A brief overview of how I approached level design in my TECHA Project C demo.
The movements mechanics were kept fairly simple. This meant that the only things I would be testing the player on would be running and jumping.
After analyzing the mechanics I drew up a sketch of 3 main areas that presented slightly different challenges. These mosly included jumping puzzles and a bridge test.
After making the Level in Unreal I realized it was lacking a bit in focus. So I changed the 3 areas to be unique tests. A simple jump up the stairs challenge, a difficult platforming challenge, and a narrow bridge.
Once I was satisfied with the main design, I added some additional challenges to each area that mainly involved precision platforming with a battery and coins rewarded at the end.
After shipping the demo I realized everything felt too small for how mobile the character was so I am currently in the process of doubling the size of all the terrain.
